While many postdocs are interested in career opportunities in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, it remains very challenging to navigate the application process and understand what it actually takes to obtain an industry position.
In the 4th Annual Joint Career Development Forum co-organized by SABPA Education & Career Development (ECD) Committee and UCSD Postdoc Association (PDA), we have invited industry hiring managers who have hired candidates at various career stages from local life science industry to form an interactive panel, sharing with the audience their perspectives of the industry hiring process and discussing the qualifications, experience and many other qualities of the successful candidates.
Tentative Schedule:
5:30 – 6:15 PM           Registration & Networking Dinner
6:15 – 6:30 PM           Welcome by SABPA ECD and UCSD PDA
6:30 – 8:00 PM           Panel Discussion
8:00 – 8:30 PM           Networking

7th SABPA/ACS Chemistry Symposium
Thursday, September 6, 2018 marked the 7th SABPA/ACS Chemistry Symposium. The event was held at Lilly Biotechnology Center with more than 130 people attending to hear talks given by Dr. Jinglan Zhou, Research Fellow I, Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Professor John L. Wood, of Baylor University. The symposium was very well received and the audience asked many great questions of both speakers both during and after the symposium. The organizing committee would like to thank ChemBridge and Pfizer, for their generous sponsorship.
In her presentation titled “Discovery of Ivacaftor, a CFTR Potentiator for the Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis”, Dr. Zhou talked about the discovery of a novel CFTR potentiator, quinolinone-3-carboxamide, using HTS in NIH-3T3 cells expressing the F508del-CFTR mutation. She then described the medicinal chemistry work used to evaluate the potency, selectivity, and pharmacokinetic properties which resulted in the identification VX-770 which was approved by the FDA in 2012 for the treatment of CF patients 6 years of age and older carrying the G551D mutation (4-5% cases of cystic fibrosis patients).

Professor John L. Wood‘s talk was titled “Recent Efforts in the Synthesis of Complex Natural Products”. Professor Wood started the lecture by reminding us that synthetic chemistry is not just a means to an end product but a process of successes and failures that lead to far more enlightenment than just the synthesis of a final compound. From there, he led us on the 22-year journey of discovery through multiple students to the final synthesis of Phomoidride D. Dr. Wood’s talk was both entertaining and enlightening, giving the audience insight into many aspects of synthesis including the role of trialkylborane-water complexes in reduction reactions such as deoxygenation of xanthates.
